The women's double sculls duo of Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.) and Megan Kalmoe (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) became the first rowers to be named to the 2009 U.S. Senior National Team, USRowing announced on Friday. The duo will represent the United States at the 2009 World Rowing Championships August 23-30 in Poznan, Poland.
Tomek and Kalmoe earned a spot on the team by winning the 2009 National Selection Regatta #2 in mid May and then winning gold this past weekend at the 2009 Rowing World Cup Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland. They officially accepted their spot on the team yesterday.
Tomek, a 2006 graduate of the University of Michigan, is now a three-time senior national team member, while Kalmoe, a 2006 graduate of the University of Washington, is a two-time senior national team member. The duo raced together in the 2008 Olympic Games, finishing fifth in Beijing.
The rest of the senior national team squad will be named over the next few weeks. Camp-selected boats will be named on or before July 27, while trials for the remaining boats will take place August 3-8.
